Hard Wood Crane Mats: Ko-Mats GmbH (English)

HOW TO IMPROVE SOFT SOIL CONDITIONS FOR HEAVY LIFTS?

When handling heavy lifts we always have to deal with the underground on which the load travels or is stored. Especially in the Netherlands, which is known for its soft soil conditions, we often have to improve the ground conditions. It is no wonder that the Dutch crane and heavy transport companies have found ways to deal with this issue and widely use hard wood crane mats, steel plates and even steel load spreading mats to spread the load on the ground and avoid accidents. These methods are not only used in the Netherlands, but find applications worldwide.

Bad soil condition and tires dig into the soil. Steel plates or crane mats avoid this

A Heavy load is in most cases transported on a hydraulic platform trailer, which consists of a large number of axles, each equipped with 2 or 4 tires. By using trailers with a large number of axle lines, the load is evenly distributed over all axles (tires), due to the hydraulic suspension system. Unfortunately the load on each tire can still be as high as 4 tons/tire (4 tires on one axle, conventional platform trailers) or even 8 tons/tire (2 tires on one axle i.e. SPMT’s).

If the tire load exceeds the allowable ground load, it will dig in and the transport combination might get stuck. To spread the tire load on the ground, and avoid digging in, a steel plate of approx. 15-25 mm thickness, does a good job and spreads the load more evenly over the ground surface. Most Heavy Lift transport contractors usually have  a number of steel plates (Dim. i.e. 6×1.5×0.02 m, 1.4 Tonne/unit) in stock, which can be mobilized and  used when necessary. Conventional hydraulic platform trailers normally can travel over tarmac roads, barge decks , compacted jobsite roads, harbor docks etc, fully loaded without extra road/deck improvement, if the ground/deck load can withstand an average load of approx. 5-10 Ton/m2.

When the soil cannot withstand this high load of a tire, as shown in picture above, then the ground needs to be covered by steel plates or hard wood crane mats to absorb the high tire load. For hydraulic platform trailers, 15-25 mm steel plates do an excellent job on a soft soil, but they are not ideal for crawler cranes.

The crawler tracks of a crane are not flexible as a  rubber tire of a platform trailer and therefore steel plates are not an ideal load spreading method. In this case hard wood timber mats are the best option.

KO-MATS for Worldwide supply
One of  the key suppliers of specially made timber mats is based in Holland and its manufacturing plant is in Guyana, South America,   where the hard wood timber is harvested in a sustainable way, supervised by the Guyana-Norwegian Forest Protection agreement. The agreement has obliged the Guyana Forestry Commission to ensure that its own regulations are strictly enforced. These require every concession to complete and maintain a full standing timber inventory and operate a selective harvest plan that ensures on-going sustainability.

SPMT tires dig in through newly laid top layer

No lumber or logs can be transported out of a concession or off of private land without prior approval from the local GFC station officer for which tag and stump inspections are the common control mechanisms. At  Bad Bentheim, just across the German border, KO-MATS have just opened another factory for fabrication of quality hard wood crane mats.

The company works closely with a number of local partners and small local co-operatives who are responsible for the work carried out in the forest itself. This not only includes felling the trees but some of the initial preparation work on the logs, including their conversion from trunks to fully formed beams. Ko-Mats helps them invest in equipment such as saws, milling machines and tractors all designed to harvest the trees and prepare the timber that is suitable for use in mat production. Once sufficient quantities of timber have been cut and trimmed at a given location, Ko-Mats sends out its own trucks to collect and bring it to the processing plant. Before the processing starts the timber is hand graded then each beam is individually drilled before moving to a large press in batches of five. Heavy steel rods are pressed into the drilled holes to create the particular mat sizes, the rod ends are then threaded and nuts and washers fitted and tightened.

A European sales base

KO-MATS, the European factory of Hardwood crane mats provides the Eastern part of the world, while the Western Hemisphere and South America are served from British Guyana, hereby keeping shipping cost as low as possible. The location was chosen in order to serve as much of the European market as possible with fast road deliveries etc… while being within easy reach of a major port for import and exporting. The Dutch location allows for rapid delivery within Europe while minimizing shipping costs by ensuring that all containers are loaded to full capacity. The company also ships directly from its plant in Georgetown, Guyana, to the Americas, Asia and Australia.

The hardwood mats

The majority of the mats that KO-MATS sell are made by bolting large beams together in a composite-type structure in order to produce specific characteristics, while minimizing wastage. They are made of boards/ beams that are processed directly from hardwood logs and are assembled with large steel bolts and thick washers, with all edges machine chamfered and ends protected creating a strong and durable hardwood mat.

Standard tropical wood crane mats from Guyana come in three versions:

Standard with Mora beams on the outside and a non-specified hardwood timber on the inside.

Premium which is made entirely from the tough close grained hard wearing Mora wood and

Excellent which uses Mora wood on the outside and Wamara on the inside.

The standard stock mats come in sizes from five metres long to just under 12 metres with thicknesses of 100 to 300 mm. Widths are of course made up to suit the job. The various sizes and mix of tropical hardwood species allow the mats to be tailored to suit a variety of different uses such as:

•         Temporary roads for equipment

•         Temporary platforms for large cranes

•         Temporary bridges and working floors

•         Protection for wharfs, ship sides, barge
decks and dredging barges

•         Protection for existing work floors to
avoid damage due to impact pressure

•         As travel roads for cranes and
excavators on pipeline projects

Advantages of timber mats

While timber mats are widely and almost exclusively used for crawler cranes, their use to create outrigger mats for large cranes has all but stopped in some markets, in favour of steel fabricated mats. Yet Ko-MATS  and other timber mat suppliers claim that there are a number of benefits in using wood, including:

-            CO2 neural

-            Weight compared to steel

-           Better physical properties with bending compared to steel/plastic, timber is elastic without being unstable.

-            Attractive price levels

-            Long lengths possible

-            Easy to use and transport

-            Timber absorbs tension rather than transporting tension onto the soil

Freight Wings is the only company in India to own & operate Fully Computerized Self Propelled Hydraulic Modular Trailers (SPMT’s).

Self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) are multi-axle trailers designed for the transportation of abnormally large / long and superheavy cargoes. The SPMT’s are modular and can be coupled side by side and end to end.

The 3rd Generation SPMT’s owned by us are fully computer controlled with a sandwich platform design made of high tensile steel STE 690V which makes the Chassis one of the strongest in the world without adding to the gross weight of the Trailers.

The chassis are attached to wheel bogies. Each wheel bogie consists of two rubber tyred wheels and is rigidly fixed to the chassis by a hinged elbow joint, which is supported on hydraulic rams.

Schermafbeelding 2013-03-05 om 21.40.14 The SPMT is propelled by hydraulic drive motors, which are mounted on the axles of the SPMT. Hydraulic power is supplied from a pump on the Diesel power pack to each of the drive motors and speed is controlled via a remote hand operated portable console.

The steering of the SPMT’s offers major advantages over other forms of conventional hydraulic trailers. The steering is controlled by electro-hydraulic motors rather than by a series of mechanical steering rods. Each of the axles of the transporter moves independently and are monitored and controlled by the computerised control system of the transporter. This offers total flexibility of steering options with each wheel bogie able to swing through 260° (+/-130°). The position of each wheel is controlled electronically through the remote operations console with nine steering programs including standard, crab, transverse & circular.

The fleet includes some of the largest and latest technology equipment available today, and has been designed to provide a top to bottom range of capacities that – combined – act as complete project fleets, providing the range, sizes and capabilities to meet modern day projects. The cranes are based in strategic locations worldwide to provide an efficient and cost-effective solution, minimising mobilisation and maximising use.

The AL.SK190 and AL.SK350 cranes

We are proud to have introduced the world’s highest-capacity land-based cranes – the AL.SK190 and AL.SK350. With the ability to lift up to 5000te, they can be dismantled and shipped around the world in ISO containers. They are also capable of being relocated fully rigged onsite saving considerable time during the construction of major projects.

For ballast, the AL.SK190 and AL.SK350 use locally available material such as sand or gravel, which is loaded into 100te capacity containers. Uniquely, the ballast remains static while the crane slews around a pivot system, making them much more appropriate for congested sites than ring cranes.
