A large group of 39 persons of the Bolore Logistics Group came together at their headquarteres in Puteaux, Paris and received a two day allround training in “Handling Heavy Lifts Safely”.

Bollore Logistics Staff from the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Norway, Spain, Portugal and France joined together in Puteaux and during the Seminar also had a chance to exchange information with their foreign colleagues.

With a limited engineering background, all participants found it a very informative Seminar and learned a lot during this two day intensive training course.

This week Richard L.Krabbendam was tied up in training the Kadmar Shipping group and others in Alexandria, Egypt.
A group of 37 delegates, most of them from Kadmar Shipping and its Subsidary EGL (Egyptian Global Logistics), but also delegates from DB Schenker, Sarens, DHL, ABDEL AAL AND CO., General Authority For Road & Bridge, Panalpina and SDV joined the 2 1/2 day Seminar which took place from Thursday to Saturday at the Kadmar Head office in the centre of Alexandria.

As EGL has recently aquired a brand new set of Goldhofer Platform trailers, they decided to invest in a specialized training course focused on Heavy Transport, Lifting & Heavy Lift Shipping.

Training & education is the best way to be successful in this specialized niche market of Heavy Transport. 

Richard went through most of his Chapters of the Master Class “Heavy Transport, Lifting & Shipping”, as well as the basics of “How to Handle Heavy Lift Safely”.

It was a very enthousiastic group, with a lot of questions which were all answered and explained in detail.

Three Day Seminar “Heavy Transport, Lifting, Shipping & Offshore” completed in Delft

Last  week from 8-10 Feb. 2017, a three Day extensive Seminar “Heavy Transport, Lifting, Shipping & Offshore” was presented by Richard L.Krabbendam (Heavy Lift Specialist) in the innovation Centre “Buccaneer” in Delft, the Netherlands.

It was almost a full house with 22 delegates from Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Panama, Ghana, Zwitserland and Denmark.

The 14 Chapters that were presented triggered a lot of questions and resulted in some interesting discussions.

After 3 Days intensive training, all delegates performed an evaluation test. The group scored an average of 67% (out of 100%)

Every Delegate gets a Certificate depending on his Test Score, which is classed from Average (60-69%), Good (70-79%), Very Good (80-89%) to Outstanding Result (90-100%).

If the score is below 60%, they receive a Certificate of Completion.

The best Score with 92% was by Frederik de Haan (Junior Installation Analysis Engineer) of Jan de Nul B.V.  See below his Certificate:

Just next to my home a Liebherr 420 EC-H 16 Tower Crane was erected for the construction company Dura Vermeer.

The crane was assembled by Van der Spek from the town of Vianen, the Dutch dealer for Liebherr Tower Cranes.

During the past two days, Richard L.Krabbendam, presented his well know Seminar “Heavy Transport, Lifting & Shipping” to the Logistical Department of Linde AG in Munich.

A group of 14 persons, participated in the Seminar and as can be seen from the evaluation sheet enjoyed what Richard had to say.

12 Chapters were presented and at the end of the second Day an evaluation test was done. Every delegate will receive a Certificate, depending on the test score.

It clearly describes that the de-rating of a crane is depending on the location of the lift points in relation to the CoG of the load.

During my carreer, I have planned and supervised a lot of multiple crane lifts and provided the correct lift plan is made and provisions are taken to monitor the forces in the lift blocks of all cranes, it can be done safely.

Lifting of a 420 Tons pressure vessel with two Demag TC-3000 cranes and a CC-2000 tail crane. An inclinometer was fitted to the skirt of the column to monitor the exact level between both lifting trunions.

A Historical video of the complex transport and erection of a large column for DSM in the Netherlands, back in 1988 executed by Van Seumeren.

It involved the load-out and roll-on into the Lastdrager 19 of a large 63 m long column and a weight of 420 tons from the small town of Goes in the West of the Netherlands, via the inland waterways to Urmond, in Limburg. There the column was rolled off and transported to the jobsite and subsequently erected using two Demag TC-3000 cranes and a CC2000 tail crane.

Back in 1989, Van Seumeren Holland erected 10 large refinery columns at the Finaneste Oil Refinery in Antwerp.

As there was in those days not a single crane available that could lift this heavy and large column of 82 m length and a weight of 512 tons, it was decided to use two Demag TC-3000 cranes and a CC-2000 crane tail crane.

A swiveling inclinometer was installed at the skirt end of the column in order to monitor the exact horizontally of both lifting trunnions while the column was being erected. To learn more about this check out www.heavyliftspecialist.com

Stability of the Load, when lifting from lift points below the CoG

A Storage tank is lifted with both heavy lift mast cranes from the Jumbo heavy Lift vessel.

The lifting slings are long enough to create a stable lift.

The example below, shows that it can go completely wrong, when these basic rules are not absorbed.

Mobile Harbor crane was lifted with insufficient stability and toppled while being offloaded. More details and video of this incident in the Seminar Slides package Click HERE

Be very carefull when using these kind of lift beams and when you are lifting from lift points below the CoG.  The load will topple and is unstable as can be seen in above picture. Learn more HERE

When lifting loads from lift points above the CoG, it will always be a stable load and when distances between the lift points and CoG are far apart the load variations in both cranes are minimal.

Crowds of people turned out to watch as the world’s largest vessel, Allseas’ “Pioneering Spirit”, departed Rotterdam Saturday morning 6 August 2016.

Allseas’ record-breaking single-lift installation/decommissioning and pipelay vessel has been moored in Rotterdam’s Alexiahaven since January 2015 for installation, commissioning and testing of the topsides lift system.

“Pioneering Spirit” will now head to the Southern North Sea to perform offshore trials throughout August, which will include a series of test platform topsides installation and removal exercises under varying weather conditions.

After the successful completion of offshore trials, “Pioneering Spirit” is expected to sail north to the Yme field, offshore Norway, to remove the 13,500 t Yme mobile offshore production unit (MOPU) for Repsol.

Following removal of the Yme platform, “Pioneering Spirit” will return to Rotterdam where the remaining four topsides lifting beams will be installed for the Shell Brent Delta topsides removal, scheduled for the summer of 2017.  SOURCE: Allseas

This was the conclusion of the Investigation Board for Safety in the Netherlands (Onderzoeksraad voor de Veiligheid).

See below the Dutch Press release which was published today and of which a short translation is given below:

Tipping of cranes Alphen aan den Rijn unavoidable

The preparation for the installation of the new bridge deck of the Queen Juliana bridge in Alphen aan den Rijn, had serious shortcomings.  The executing contractors had underestimated the complexity of the scope of work and non of the parties involved realized, that lifting a bridge deck was risky for the environment. This appeared from the report which was published today by the “Onderzoeksraad voor Veiligheid “. Due to the low stability of the Lifting equipment, the tipping over was unavoidable. Even if the execution of the planned work had been done flawlessly, it could not have been avoided.

Lifting Plan incomplete and not suitable

During the preparation of this project with regard to lifting from floating pontoons, one had insufficiently taken into account a number of factors, that influence the stability, such as shifting of the CoG, when manoevring with the cranes, wind effect and bending of the crane boom. In the last version of the Lift plan, a Stability calculation failed. Neither a detailed ballast plan was made.  Both cranes were used up to their max. lifting capacity at that radius, with no margin for absorbing any deviating circumstances. The Crane rental company and the Barge owner assumed that by careful manoevring and ballasting they could safely executed the project. They approached the project as a “Routine job”, with systematically under estimating the risks involved.

Risk mitigating insufficient

The contract for the renovation of the bridge was given to a building combination existing of a Civil Contractor and Steel Contractor. The Civil contractor had a Key role and had to supervise that all risks were adequately managed. This was done insufficiently. They saw it as part of the responsibility of the Steel Contractor, who had hired in the Crane rental company and left the lifting to them. By splitting up various tasks and responsibilities, the risk management was inadequate. All parties involved trusted each other blind on their knowledge and experience and leaned on the responsibility of each other. The Steel Contractor as well as the Civil Contractor allowed to work with an unsafe lifting plan.

Safety of the environment not investigated

The execution of this complex lifting project close to a densely populated area was in the preparation of the project no reason to closely study the possible risks involved to the environment. Both cranes reached almost 40 m above the surounding houses and were positioned on free floating pontoons. The focus of the municipality was to avoid as much as possible the disturbance of the neighbouring houses. The Municipality’s task is to garantee the safety of its residents, especially when projects are executed in a densely populated area.

Recommendations

The “Onderszoeksraad voor de Veiligheid” states that it is crucial that during execution of building structures, an adequate Risk Management is needed. It is recommended to appoint one Central Party, who is responsible for Risk Management, and amongst others the safety of the surrounding area.

Omvallen hijskranen Alphen aan den Rijn onvermijdelijk

De voorbereiding op het plaatsen van het nieuwe brugdek van de Koningin Julianabrug in Alphen aan den Rijn, schoot ernstig tekort. De uitvoerende bedrijven onderschatten de complexiteit van de werkzaamheden en geen enkele partij realiseerde zich dat het hijsen van het brugdeel risico’s had voor de omgeving. Dit blijkt uit het vandaag gepubliceerde rapport van de Onderzoeksraad voor Veiligheid naar aanleiding van het omvallen van de hijskranen in Alphen aan den Rijn in de zomer van 2015. Door de lage stabiliteit van de hijsopstelling was het omvallen van de kranen onvermijdelijk. Zelfs een vlekkeloze uitvoering van de geplande werkzaamheden had dit niet kunnen voorkomen.

Tijdens het hijsen van het nieuwe brugdek vielen op 3 augustus 2015 twee hijskranen om en kwamen samen met het brugdek terecht op naastgelegen woningen en winkelpanden. De materiële schade was enorm en als bij wonder vielen er geen slachtoffers. De Onderzoeksraad is nagegaan hoe de hijsklus is voorbereid en uitgevoerd en keek daarbij ook hoe betrokken partijen invulling gaven aan hun taken en verantwoordelijkheden. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat de hijsopstelling al bij aanvang van de werkzaamheden een te lage stabiliteit had. Toen tijdens het hijsen een van de pontons sterk begon te hellen, bezweek de kleinste kraan onder het gewicht en trok vervolgens de gehele hijsopstelling mee in zijn val.

Hijsplan incompleet en ongeschikt

In de voorbereiding van de hijswerkzaamheden vanaf het water werd de complexiteit ervan onderschat. Zo is onvoldoende stilgestaan bij het belang van stabiliteit en de werking hiervan. In het hijsplan werd geen rekening gehouden met een aantal factoren dat de stabiliteit beïnvloedt, zoals het verschuiven van het zwaartepunt door het manoeuvreren met de kranen, de wind en de doorbuiging van de mast. In de laatste versie van het hijsplan ontbrak een stabiliteitsberekening. Ook voorzag het hijsplan niet in een ballastplan voor de pontons om eventuele scheefstand tijdig te kunnen corrigeren. Verder bleek uit het hijsplan dat de kranen tot hun maximale capaciteit werden ingezet. Hierdoor was er geen ruimte om gedurende het werk afwijkende omstandigheden  op te vangen. Het kraanbedrijf en het pontonbedrijf gingen er vanuit dat door voorzichtig te werken en de pontons goed te ballasten, de werkzaamheden veilig uitgevoerd konden worden. De Onderzoeksraad constateert dat de partijen het werk benaderden als een routineklus waarbij de risico’s systematisch werden onderschat en dat het hijsplan incompleet en ongeschikt was.

Risicobeheersing schiet tekort

De opdracht voor de renovatie van de Koningin Julianabrug was gegeven aan een bouwcombinatie bestaande uit een bouwbedrijf en een staalbouwer. Het bouwbedrijf had als projectleider een spilfunctie en moest erop toezien dat alle risico’s adequaat werden beheerst. Het bouwbedrijf vulde deze verantwoordelijkheid echter onvoldoende in. Het bouwbedrijf zag het plaatsen van het brugdeel als onderdeel van de taak van de staalbouwer, die het kraanbedrijf had ingehuurd en bemoeide zich vervolgens niet met de voorbereidingen. Door deze versnippering van taken en verantwoordelijkheden schoot de risicobeheersing tekort. De partijen vertrouwden blind op elkaars kennis en ervaring en leunden op de verantwoordelijkheid van de ander. Zowel de staalbouwer als het bouwbedrijf lieten zo gebeuren dat er met een onveilige hijsopstelling werd gewerkt.

Veiligheid omgeving niet onderzocht

Dat de complexe werkzaamheden met groot materieel werden uitgevoerd in dichtbebouwd gebied, was voor geen enkele partij aanleiding om in de voorbereiding bewust stil te staan bij mogelijke risico’s voor de omgeving. De kranen staken ruim veertig meter boven de bebouwing uit en stonden op pontons in het water. Desondanks voelde geen enkele partij zich geroepen om de veiligheid van de omgeving en de potentieel ernstige gevolgen te onderzoeken en te beheersen. Bij de renovatie van de Julianabrug lag de focus van de gemeente op het voorkomen van hinder en overlast voor omwonenden. Dit terwijl de gemeente een belangrijke (overheids-)taak heeft in het waarborgen van de publieke veiligheid, zeker bij werkzaamheden in dichtbebouwd gebied. Een gemeente kan zowel als opdrachtgever en als vergunningverlener actief sturen op omgevingsveiligheid. Dat laat onverlet dat de uitvoerende partijen uiteindelijk de verantwoordelijkheid hebben om het werk veilig uit te voeren.

Aanbevelingen

De Onderzoeksraad vindt het van cruciaal belang dat er bij de realisatie van bouwwerken een adequate vorm van risicobeheersing komt. Gedurende het totale bouwtraject en door de gehele keten moeten betrokken partijen samenwerken om risico’s te identificeren en te beheersen. De Raad beveelt daarom aan om bij bouwprojecten één centrale partij aan te wijzen die de verantwoordelijkheid draagt voor risicobeheersing, waaronder omgevingsveiligheid. Verder beveelt de Raad aan om omgevingsveiligheid als gunningscriterium op te nemen in aanbestedingen van bouwwerken. Ook moet er een afwegingskader komen in het Bouwbesluit dat bepaalt onder welke omstandigheden een bouwveiligheidsplan geboden is. Voor de uitvoerende partijen beveelt de Onderzoeksraad aan om de kennis en deskundigheid te vergroten voor een veilige uitvoering van het werk en een goede invulling van de verantwoordelijkheden.

This week an “In Company” Seminar “Heavy Transport, Lifting & Offshore” was presented at ENERPAC in Hengelo of the Netherlands.

A group of 16 persons attended the two day Seminar which took place on 7 and 8th of June 2016 at the Enerpac Head quarters for Hydraulic Gantries and Strandjacks.

The Heavy Lift Specialist has helped SapuraAcergy/Total to find the right contractor to perform this prestigious Shipping ProjectBiglift

Amsterdam, 5 April 2016 – SapuraAcergy awarded BigLift Shipping the transportation contract for a wellhead production topside module for the Yadana gas field, off Myanmar. BigLift had to load the module in Ulsan, Korea, and take it to the Yadana field, where SapuraAcergy’s S3000 would lift it off and install it onto its offshore foundation.

Happy Star was scheduled for the task. She loaded the topside module of just under 1,000 mt with her two 900 mt heavy lift mast cranes at Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan.

This week an “In Company” Seminar was presented by Richard L.Krabbendam (Heavy Lift Specialist) at Holmatro Industrial Tools in the Netherlands.

A group of 11 Sales and  Service Engineers attended the two day Seminar, with its goal to improve “Heavy Lift” knowledge and awareness amongst its staff, in order to fullfill clients needs better now and in the near future.

At Holmatro’s factory and headquarters in Raamsdonksveer the group attended the two day Seminra/Masterclass in which the basic principles of handling Heavy Lift was explained in detail.

30 Staff of Integrated Logistics in Kuwait in front of one of their Terex AC1000 (1000 tons Crane)

Last year end Sept. 2015, a group of 16 engineers received a 3 Day intensive Training by the Heavy Lift Specialist Richard L.Krabbendam.

Integrated Logistics, a specialized Heavy Transport & Lifting contractor in Kuwait understands the importance of improving knowlegde of its engineering staff.

With more then 500 Cranes, amongst them a Terex Demag CC8800 as well as other large crawler cranes and a series of Mobile Hydraulic cranes from Terex (largest ones 2 x 1000 Tons AC1000), Grove and Tadano as well as a fleet of exclusively Goldhofer PST-E Self Propeled Modular Transporters and conventinal axlelines and three Heavy Duty Titan 8×8 tractor units, it is vital that its staff clearly understands “How to handle Heavy Lift Safely”.

The past three days, Richard Krabbendam, known as the “Heavy Lift Specialist” presented his Masterclass/ Seminar “Heavy Transport, Lifting & Shipping to a group of 17 persons from Abu Dhabi, Dubai, France and Ras Al Khaima, UAE. 

Amongst the partcipants a large group of the Greek Construction company Archirodon.  It was a very enthousiastic group with lots of questions which were all dealt with in detail.
