Qatargas takes “JUMBO” step towards new LNG terminal

Doha, Qatar, April 16 2009: Qatargas has taken a giant step towards completing a new Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) tanker berth at Ras Laffan with the arrival of a massive gas loading module on board the heavy-cargo ship, “Jumbo”.

The 875 tonnes topside module houses four LNG loading arms, pumps and other equipment, that allow LNG to be transferred from onshore storage tanks to tankers for shipping to overseas markets. The unit was built by Adyard in Abu Dhabi. When connected up as part of Ras Laffan Port’s new LNG Berth 6, it will be able to load 14,000 m3 of LNG per hour.

Construction of Berth 6 is being managed by the team working on the Qatargas 3 and Qatargas 4 LNG expansion projects.

Berth 6 Project Manager, Bertrand Boudier said: “I am very pleased that the topside module has arrived safely after its voyage from Abu Dhabi. It was safely completed in 14  months with 500,000 man hours without a lost time injury. Our work on site at Ras Laffan to complete the new 550 metres long abutment to which the tankers will moor is well on track to be ready by the first quarter of 2010.”

WAGENBORG NEDLIFT, The Netherlands

Giant transformer on the way to Ens substation

The Tennet substation located in Ens, Netherlands has been expanded with one big transformer. Wagenborg Nedlift transported the 320 tons giant transformer from the fabrication yard in Nijmegen up to the foundation in Ens. The substation is extended due to increasing demand for electricity.

During several nights, Wagenborg Nedlift’s crew was busy to execute this extraordinary transport. Right through the inner city of Nijmegen, a railway passage was done. For this operation, the railway was blocked for a short time. Then the transport headed for quayside, were transhipment onto barge took place. Via inland water, the transformer reached the quay near site Ens. For the last 8,5 kilometers, highway N50 was used. The highway was closed for a while for other traffic during night hours. After this passage, the convoy headed for its final destination without any obstacles. Upon arrival at site, the transformer was installed on its foundation.

The complete transport project was prepared, engineered and executed within only 3 weeks. A fine piece of work from the Nedlift project team!

Turbine transport to T-power Tessenderlo

Perhaps you haven’t noticed, but last Monday night, highway A13 near Tessenderlo was blocked (again) by Wagenborg Nedlift. An extraordinary transport of a turbine (312 tons), generator (342 tons) and transformer (200 tons) crossed the highway heading for new built Tpower Tessenderlo power plant.

A few days earlier, the heavy cargo up to 343 tons was discharged in Antwerp from seagoing vessel with floating crane Brabo onto river barges. Upon arrival at nearest quay, a roll-off operation took place with SPMTs and conventional trailers. Once rolled off, the convoy slowly moved to highway A13. At Monday night, A13 was closed for a few hours to let the unusual traffic pass. Early morning on Tuesday, the heavy pieces reached their final destination and were placed onto foundation inside the power train building.

Claus C – under Construction

 

The construction site of Maasbracht Claus C powerplant is quite busy these days. An international community of German, Spanish and Dutch workers is busy with the construction of this unique extension project of Essent. This week, Wagenborg Nedlift, who executes the logistics of the heavy power train parts, had a milestone. The first power train was completely installed onto foundation. With barge transports, the heavy parts of 300 to 400 tons each were transported via river from Rotterdam to Maasbracht. Via a roll-off operation, the parts were brought on land. From there, SPMTs transported the items to the turbine building. With a skid system the cargo was offloaded from trailer and brought inside the turbine building. There a new challenge for the Wagenborg crew popped up: the narrow space for the installation works. Of course, a method statement was developed during project preparation phase: the skid system was installed on the existing foundation elements. Lowering the items onto their foundation was done easily that way and the complete power train was installed. The second train will be installed before the end of this year and the third one early 2010.

Lift went off with minor issues.  Was on my way out and took a few pictures from the roof of the hotel…one attached.  Just a tad over 1000 metric tons on the hook…..It is the walls of the Reactor, Steam Generators and Pressurizer compartments.  Hollow walls and we will fill them with concrete once it is in final position……and we install about 300 more embed plates.
